HortPark & Southern Ridges Photo Expedition

In preparation for the Clean & Green Singapore Photo Contest. I brought the whole troops of Tg. Katong AV Media Club members (32 or them!) for a shooting trip at the scenic Hortpark and Southern Ridges.

The HortPark got some real nice landscaping, but it was the height of the Southern Ridges and the spectacular on-top-of-forest view than blown us away! The only problem we faced was some of the girls were not too combatable with height! But still we manage to produce some stunning photos.

Photo Contest 2010: Clean and Green Singapore, You and Me

The first Photo Contest we are shooting for in this 2010 is Clean and Green Singapore, You and Me organised by NEA and Photographic Society of NUS.

Closing Date: 10 Feb 2010 (Students Cat.)
Prize: First Prize $500 Cash.
Theme: Photographs depicting our clean landscape with images of Singaporeans taking ownership of the environment.

Photos: Min 3 to Max 5. The series of photographs should clearly depict a story based on the theme of the competition, and should be accompanied by captions and / or a write-up of not more than 300 words.

Kranji Creative Collage

Beautiful Collage design from Kranji Sec Sch Media Club. Lots of very interesting works. Photos taken from field trips to Little India and China Town. Members then turned the best shot into Collage using Photomix Software. Class conducted by Colorwise.

Little India from a Young Photographer

The young mind given enough opportunities will always surprise you with their creativity. This has been proven many times during my work as a photographic instructor in various school. Last Friday I brought a group of Students from Tanjong Katong Sec. Sch. for a photo session at Little India. The students turn out many good work. One students submitted a photo and the description that leave me a deep impression on what photography can contribute to the understanding of the world around by the young minds.

Title: Perspective from a Chinese

Being a Chinese national, it was the first time that i set foot in Singapore's famous Indian temple, Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, I was very sure that there was a festival going on, so I reached there at 3pm. To my surprise, the temple was still closed. Being a curious chap, I peeked into one of the holes and found out that the participants were still preparing for the festival. I wondered aimlessly in the temple when it opened. I breathe in the heavy fumes of incense which felt calming to my senses. To my amazement there were many people sitting around the floor. Different races of people were sitting around in the same room. This open concept made me feel extremely comfortable. At 5 in the evening, the much awaited festival finally begun. Many Indians crowded around a small place. Without knowing, my exhausted feet and excited mind brought me there to watch the event. Some people were even holding brightly-lit candles. After that, two of the participants sat in a prominent place, I closed my eyes and I could hear the soft chanting of Indian scriptures......

Digital Photography as Lifeskill @ Tg. Katong

20+ Tg. Katong Secondary School Sec. 4 students are attending the Digital Photography Lifeskill course run by Colorwise. Today we have a hands-on session in the school and the students work real hard to get the best shots. They are really creative put those theory learn in the class to good use.

Double 1st For Tanjong Katong Sec. School Young Photographer in Photo Contest!

It was truly thrilling and satisfying when Maurice Lim for Tanjong Katong Secondary School clinched the 1st Prize in the National Racial Harmony Photo Competition organised by Tanjong Pagar CC. This has been the first major competition title clinched by the Tg. Katong Photography Club.

Then a month later good news came again. Maurice clinched another 1st in Photo Competition organised by Mountbatten CC! This time other young photographers at the Club swept all the title! Really spectacular results, many of them are in lower secondary indeed.

Colorwise was engaged by Tanjong Katong Sec School to design a comprehensive Photography training program focus on competition theme. We did just that and the performance of the young photographers were the best testimonial.

1st National ArithmetEQ Challenge Results

The 1st National ArithmetEQ Challenge co-organised by Yishun Secondary & Colorwise

was a great success with more than 50 teams turned up to out wit one another on the Board. Yishun Secondary emerged Champion on the eventful days. Most important of all both participants and teachers enjoyed the fun and exciting ArithmetEQ Board Game. See you next year.

Dunman High First Photo Shooting

The Dunman High Photography Club has its first outing at Mt. Sinai. We made a short walk to a nearby playground and the young Dunman Photographer got lots of exciting pictures.

Later we move along the road to capture some nice flowers outside a private house and we got invited in by the owners! What a pleasant surprise! The owner is very artistic and his wife plant lots of flower. We manage to capture many interesting shots both in and outside the house. Photography is a bridge that connect people, that what came into my mind.

new Photobook

12 teachers from the Singapore Chinese Teachers' Union (SCTU) were the first to try our new Photobook course. This course involves an outdoor photoshoot, PhotoMix Collage design lesson and a compilation into the Photobook.

The outdoor photoshoot was held in Little India. The teachers had a great day taking photos of the sights in Little India. The architecture, the people, the food, nothing escaped the sharp eyes of our budding photographers. View their photos here.

The photos were then used to create collage masterpieces with the simple-to-use PhotoMix Collage Software. Their collage masterpieces were printed and binded into a Photobook for each participant.

The Photobook (above) is a great way to showcase one's masterpieces, it is binded into a portfolio for easier reference and reading. Personalise your photos and combine them into collages. It is a good way to show off one's creativity and artistic skills. The Photobook is more exciting than a boring photo album!

在新加坡华文教师总会 (Singapore Chinese Teachers' Union)首次举行的基本数码录影课程（basic digitial video course）获得教师们的热烈反应。

课程介绍数码录影机的正确使用与数码录影的窍门和艺术。

他们先学些有关摄影的理论，然后分小组，在附近的亚笼街进行拍摄，介绍当地的美食与丰富历史，制成小短片。

这种实地拍摄非常有趣，也使他们经历拍摄过程所能遇到的种种难题，例如嘈杂声多，就难分辨自己的记叙。

他们也学如何用　Windows Movie Maker　与其他类似软件，　把拍摄的片段剪接，再加上不同的效果与音乐，制造属于自己的小电影！

这两天的课程让参加的华文教师获益不浅，原本陌生的软件也获悉了。课程未落幕，他们就开始询问有关高级录影课程，可见教师们的求知欲高，也是对我们主办一个好和有趣的课程的最佳肯定！

Colorwise conducted the first 'basic digital video course' for the Singapore Chinese Teachers' Union (SCTU). The course was taught in Mandarin (english courses are available too). Participants learnt the theories for videography, how to use and apply the various functions, how to compose a video, etc.

The highlight of the course was a hands-on practical session. Participants went around the nearby Geylang Street, filming clips to showcase the area's rich history and famous food culture. Through this activity, they had a first-hand encounter with possible problems arising when handling the video-cameras, such as a noisy background will make it difficult to comprehend narration. Making theory come alive is the best way to learn!

They were also taught how to use Windows Movie Maker and other software to edit and combine short clips. The various effects and tools available was a big eye-opener for the participants.Before the end of the course, they were already enquiring about intermediate/adavance video courses that they can sign up for.
This is probably the best vote of confidence they can give us for a course well-conducted!

Digital Photography @ Yangzheng Primary

30 pupils from Yangzheng Primary School kicked off their June Holidays with a 3 day Digital Photography Workshop and Collage design. First, they learnt the basics of photography, such as using flash and different modes like portrait and landscape, as well as how to compose a good photo. Then, they had a hands-on with the cameras by going around the school premises and taking photos, with instructors on hand to guide and answer any queries.

Finally, they used the photos they have taken to make collages using PhotoMix software.

At the end of the course, each participant is given a CD with the photos they have taken and an A4 print-out of their collage on Premium Glossy Photo Paper.

The pupils definitely benefitted tremendously from this course. Now, they will be able to take a good photo and make beautiful collage designs. What a way to kick-start the holidays!

SAGE flea market

Colorwise took part in the SAGE Flea Market held from 25-26 May. It was a chance for us to showcase our products and services to the SAGE members.

ArithmetEQ for Juniors!

A trial for the NEW 'ArithmetEQ Junior' was conducted last week at Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School. The Primary 1 and 2 pupils enjoyed themselves tremendously, actively forming equations and learning in the process. Some valuable feedback was gathered too and improvements will be made.
Look out for this exciting new product, launching soon!

"Previously only for ages 10 and up, the new ArithmetEQ Junior is targeted at lower primary pupils. Higher level operations like ^ and √ were removed, leaving only the basic operations of +, -, x, ÷. The aim of the Junior version is to leverage on the lower primary students' maths foundation to help prepare them for higher study in the years to come. A strong foundation is the basic building block for success."

Collage-making goes digital!

After a 2-week break for the exams, the Primary 4 pupils of Concord Primary School resumed their Digital Photography Workshop. Having hands-on with a digital camera and taking many wonderful photos, they now had to combine them into collages.

"Making collages used to be a tedious affair. Cutting pictures, pasting them, it was messy and time-consuming. However, with PhotoMix, all that is now history. PhotoMix is an easy-to-use windows software for digital scrapbooking and photo collage creation. Its user-friendly interface means that making collages is now a breeze."

The students were shown how to use PhotoMix and its many useful functions. They were able to pick it up very quickly due to its easy-to-use interface. Adding photos, creating borders, inserting clip-arts, writing text, etc, all just require a few clicks of the mouse only.

Their only worry then seems to be choosing which of their many photos to add into their masterpiece!

大拇指第１５期的头条新闻是有关“全国小学方块精灵争霸赛”的报道，里头包括了花菲卫理小学的卓思慧与刘诗佳的访问。她们俩来头不小，是今年比赛冠军，打败了来自19间小学的53支队伍。

Say "Cheese"!

On the 13th of April 2007, students from Primary 4B, 4I, 4G of Concord Primary School had session 2 of their Digital Photography and Creative Collage Workshop organised by colorwise.

Session 1 (held the week before) saw them learning the basics of photography, such as how to compose a photo and to take advantage of the different modes on the camera to optimise the quality of their photos. Session 2 would be hands-on with the cameras (right) and applying their theory into practice. Our instructors were on-hand to guide and answer any queries (left).

It was heartening to see the children running about, taking photos and clearly enjoying themselves. The enthusiastic children sure had a field day striking poses (right) and taking photos of each other as well as of the school compound. For some, it was their first time handling a digital camera, for others, this was the chance to brush up their skills and pique their interest for photography. Whatever the case, everyone went back more knowledgeable and greatly anticipating session 3 next week, where they will get to compile their photos into collages using PhotoMix.

我们是方块精灵高手！

“全国小学方块精灵争霸赛”已4月12日在安德逊中学举行。这次比赛受到热烈支持，总共吸引19所本地小学参与。比赛以二人一组的方式进行，通过初赛选出16组分数最高的进入半决赛。16组以抽签的方式分成4桌，再度进行比赛。每桌分数最高组将能够进入总决赛，一决雌雄，争夺冠军荣誉。本地各大中文媒体例如“大拇指”也到此采访。

这次比赛非常激烈，参赛者个个做好充分准备，胸有成竹。他们积极动脑筋拼字，目的就是要拿到最高分数，为校争光。经过一番龙争虎斗，脱颖而出的是花菲卫理小学的卓思慧与刘诗佳（右）。

她们受访时透露成功的秘诀，那就是多练习，多查字典，看字多，自然而然拼起字来就容易了。她们认为方块精灵是一个有趣灵活的学华语方式，需要反应快，脑筋转得更快，可以边玩边学习，何乐不为。

可见方块精灵真的是一个含有无限教育潜能的好教材。利用部首偏旁来组合汉字，认识新生字，加强学生们的语文能力。
